Before I start painting I have a slightly ambiguous feeling: happiness is a special excitement because unhappiness is always possible a moment later. |
Beginning Drawing
Learning to draw is the first step for any aspiring artist desiring to share their vision with the rest of the world. Whether an artist is striving to create a drawing, painting, sculpture, or film, the starting place in most art forms is making marks on a sheet of paper. Drawing is the gateway for an artist's vision into physical reality.
Drawing is often looked at in our society as an ability that a person is either "born with or without." Most people do not realize, however, that being able to draw is much more akin to speaking a foreign language. It is a skill that can be learned and then practiced, practiced, practiced until one is fluent in the artistic language.
The two drawing classes offered by the Healing Forest Studio, Drawing I and Drawing II, are the general equivalent of a Drawing 101 found at a university. Drawing I introduces the students to techniques and concepts such as gesture, blind/modified contour, positive/negative space, and value. The student is also introduced to the common drawing media such as graphite, charcoal and ink. Drawing II is more conceptual class where students develop their first series of drawings, begin outdoor studies and begin more complex projects.
